How to Apply for a Marriage License in New Hampshire

Before an officiant can legally marry you, you must obtain a valid New Hampshire marriage license from a city or town clerk.

You do not need to live in New Hampshire to get married here. Residents and out-of-state couples may apply at any New Hampshire city or town clerk’s office, and the ceremony may take place anywhere within the state.

1. Choose a New Hampshire City or Town Clerk

You may apply for your marriage license at any city or town clerk’s office in New Hampshire. You do not need to apply in the same municipality where your ceremony will take place.

If you plan to apply in Manchester, verify the City Clerk’s current hours before visiting. Manchester currently requires couples applying for a marriage license to arrive no later than 3:00 p.m.

Your marriage license is valid for 90 days. If you do not marry within that period, you will need to apply for a new license and pay the fee again.

6. Bring the License to Your Wedding Officiant

Give the original marriage license to your officiant before the ceremony. After you exchange your declaration of intent, the officiant will complete the required section of the license.

7. Request a Certified Marriage Certificate
