How to Make Sure Your Friend or Family Member Can Legally Marry You in Maine

You Love the Idea of Someone Personal Marrying You

Because honestly? The thought of standing up there with a complete stranger can feel… off.

You want someone who actually knows you.
Someone who understands your relationship.
Someone who can laugh with you when things get emotional or unexpected.

Maybe it’s your brother.
Your best friend.
Your aunt who introduced you.
The person who’s been there through everything.

That’s the ceremony you actually want.

Not stiff.
Not robotic.
Not someone reading a generic script they used six times last weekend.

  • You want it to feel real.

But then reality creeps in.

Once you start looking into it, you realize:

  • Wait… can they legally marry us?

  • What paperwork actually needs to happen?

  • Does Maine require ordination? Witnesses? Waiting periods?

  • Who signs what?

  • What if they forget something?

  • What if the license is filled out incorrectly?

  • What if the ceremony feels awkward?

  • What if they panic in front of 150 people?

  • What if the marriage paperwork gets rejected afterward?

And suddenly the thing that felt warm and meaningful… starts feeling risky.

Your wedding ceremony is not the time you want uncertainty.

You don’t want to spend weeks planning the perfect day only to discover:

  • the license wasn’t completed properly

  • the officiant missed a required step

  • the paperwork was returned incorrectly

  • your friend froze during the ceremony

  • the ceremony felt disorganized instead of intimate

You deserve both.

  • the emotional warmth of a personal ceremony
    AND

  • the confidence that everything is handled correctly.

You don’t have to choose.

At Joyous Engagements, I help couples bridge that exact gap.

I’m Katie French — a professional wedding officiant who has guided more than 100 couples through ceremonies that feel personal, natural, warm, and legally seamless.

The goal is simple:

Make your ceremony feel like it’s being led by someone who truly knows you… while making sure everything behind the scenes is handled correctly.

Option 1: Have me officiate

I get to know you and your future spouse well enough that it doesn’t feel cookie cutter, sterile, or impersonal.

Option 2: I coach your person

I’ll work with them every step of the way to make sure they stick the landing.

Considerations when deciding which path is yours

Whether I officiate your wedding or coach your friend or family member, the goal is a flawlessly executed wedding that feels like yours.

  • This is the best fit for couples who

    • want a ceremony that feels warm and personal

    • want someone experienced guiding the flow

    • want confidence the paperwork is done correctly

    • want someone who can improvise naturally if unexpected moments happen

    • want the emotional feel of a friend marrying them — without the stress

  • Sometimes the dream really is having your person officiate.

    I completely understand that.

That’s why I also offer officiant coaching for couples who want a friend or family member to lead the ceremony — but want professional guidance behind the scenes.

    I help your chosen officiant:

    • understand the legal requirements

    • prepare the ceremony flow

    • feel confident speaking publicly

    • avoid common mistakes

    • handle the marriage license correctly

    • create a ceremony that feels polished, warm, and natural

Think of it like having a professional wedding officiant quietly helping behind the curtain.

Your loved one still gets the spotlight.
You still get the deeply personal ceremony.
But now everyone feels more confident.

  • Here's what most couples don't realize:

  • Officiating is more than just words on a page.

  • It’s managing the pacing so the ceremony never feels awkward or rushed.

  • It’s calming nerves when emotions hit harder than expected.

  • It’s catching the little unexpected moments

  • and turning them into something memorable

  • It’s reading the crowd and engaging them.

  • and yes, it's making it legal.

Nothing ever goes perfectly.

Weddings always have little off-script moments. That’s normal. Experience is what allows those moments to feel personal and genuine instead of stressful. That’s often the difference between a ceremony people politely say was “nice”… and one that truly felt like you.

The truth most couples discover too late

A friend or family member can absolutely create a beautiful ceremony… but most have never done it before…

+managing ceremony pacing
+handling marriage paperwork
+speaking in front of a large emotional crowd
+improvising during unexpected moments
+balancing humor, sincerity, and timing

A little preparation changes everything.

“I got asked to officiate one of my best friend’s wedding and Katie helped prepare me for this incredibly important event. We went through how to configure a wedding ceremony, some of the religious nuances to consider and most importantly, things to look out for in regards to the logistics on the actual day that only a season pro would know. Can’t say enough good things about her professionalism as well as her creativity. Katie is a gem and would recommend her services without hesitation.”

“I can not recommend Katie enough!! As a wedding planner I work with so many different wedding industry vendors and officiants- Katie by far is one of the best in the trade! It is so evident how much she loves what she does! She helped put on the most beautiful ceremony for our couples very special day!”

“Katie is the definition of a ray of sunshine. She was always checking in on us; making sure we have everything in place and was always transparent about things. She kept us in the loop when it comes to the process of getting married and what “the next steps” are.

She always says it’s like “your friend is marrying you” and it could not be more true. She takes the time to really get to know you. She made us feel warm and honestly by the end of it, it felt like she has been in my life for years.”

“Katie worked and coached my friend and I cannot tell you how many compliments we got about the ceremony bring absolutely personable, approachable, and touched everyone’s hearts! It truly was a beautiful ceremony!!! We had the best day every and Katie’s coaching to our officiant and helping her draft her ceremony and help her through the process on getting ordained was perfect.”

And to answer your question, getting married by a friend in Maine is legally an option.

Have them get ordained online.

But make sure you have two witnesses.
